Healing through the lens of survivors:
A PhotoVoice Project

PhotoVoice empowers people to share their experiences through digital storytelling. In this project women captured photographs using a phone or camera, that represented their experiences of healing. The photographs were professionally printed and exhibited in Creative Hearts Art Gallery throughout Sexual Violence Awareness Month (October 2024).

CHARLENE

The writings accompanying Charlene's set of photographs were part of a longer poem.

The poem may not be suitable for some readers. It outlines the writer’s raw account of trauma and healing, including descriptions of abuse and violence. This may be confronting.

Gold Coast Centre Against Sexual Violence is on Yugambeh country. In the spirit of respect and humanity, we recognise the Aboriginal peoples of Australia as the traditional owners and custodians of these lands and waters. We pay our respect to them, their cultures and their elders past, present and emerging. We recognise the strength and resilience of First Nations Peoples in fighting for their cultures, communities, and lands.
